As a Dundee wedding photographer, there’s something extra special about photographing people you already know. Claire and I have been bumping into each other during years of school runs, dog walks, gym attempts and Tesco trips. We always have a good chat and a laugh. So when she got in touch about photographing her wedding to Colin, I was chuffed to bits. I’d seen Colin on Claire's Facebook over the years, always in photos where the two of them looked genuinely happy. Meeting him properly on the wedding day just confirmed it. Calm, friendly, and clearly buzzing to be marrying Claire. They’d planned a relaxed, low key day – nothing formal, just good people, good laughs, and plenty time spent with their family and closest friends. Honestly, those are often the best kinds of weddings to photograph. Their ceremony took place in the lovely Hollins Room at the Dundee Registrars Office right in the heart of the city. It’s a cracking spot for a Dundee wedding – big, bright and close to loads of great photo backdrops. Colin arrived first along with their guests consisting of their immediate families and best friends. There was a relaxed atmosphere while they awaited the bride. Claire arrived not long after, looking absolutely beautiful and ready to get married. One of the best parts of the day was having their grown up kids involved. They weren’t just guests – they had proper roles and responsibilities, and you could see how much it meant to everyone. Weddings like this aren’t just about two people – they’re about families coming together. The ceremony itself was heartfelt, relaxed, and full of smiles. No fuss. Just Claire and Colin doing their thing, surrounded by those who matter most. And just like that – they were married.
Rain? No bother.
After the ceremony, Claire and Colin were greeted with hugs, handshakes, and loads of congratulations inside the registrars office. You could feel the warmth straight away – real happiness for the two of them. The original plan was to head down to Slessor Gardens for a few group photos. But, in true Scottish fashion, the rain decided it wanted involved in the wedding as well. Timing wise, it was classic. Just as we stepped outside, the heavens opened. This is where knowing Dundee well pays off, I know all the nearby sheltered spots that still look great in photos. So instead of stressing, we adapted. We created a confetti tunnel… in an actual tunnel. And it worked an absolute treat. Sometimes those unexpected moments turn into the best photos. After that, we headed up to the steps of the Caird Hall. The grand columns and sandstone steps give such a timeless backdrop. Rain or no rain – Dundee always delivers.
Waterfront wanderings
By this point, the rain had eased off a bit, so guests made their way along to Malmaison Dundee for drinks. Meanwhile, I took Claire and Colin for a wee wander along the waterfront. This is always one of my favourite parts of any wedding – that quiet time where the couple can just breathe and enjoy being newly married. We got some brilliant photos around the V&A Dundee. The architecture there is modern and bold, it gives such a unique backdrop, especially when the sky is moody like it was that day. Claire and Colin were absolute naturals. No awkward posing, just chatting, laughing, and enjoying the moment. That’s always the goal – nothing forced, just real moments. The sky started darkening again (cheers Scotland), so we made a quick dash back towards Malmaison. Before leaving them to enjoy dinner with their guests, we grabbed a few quick photos on the staircase inside Malmaison. Then it was time for them to relax, eat, drink, and celebrate properly.
Chambers East: party time
The evening celebrations took place at Chambers East, and it was the perfect choice. If you’re planning a Chambers East wedding, you’ll know exactly what I mean. Great atmosphere, brilliant space, not too big or small and ideal for a proper celebration. Evening guests arrived, drinks were flowing and the band was getting ready to kick things off. Claire and Colin were surrounded by friends, family, and so much laughter. The dance floor didn’t stay empty for long. After a few dances, we nipped out for photos at the nearby McManus Galleries. The building is too good not to include in your wedding photos! Then it was straight back inside for more dancing, more laughs, and more celebrating.
As someone who photographs weddings across Scotland, I can honestly say there’s something uniquely brilliant about a Dundee Registrars wedding. Everything is close together. You’ve got the waterfront, Caird Hall, the V&A, Malmaison, and brilliant venues like Chambers East all within walking distance. Claire and Colin’s wedding was a perfect example of that. Relaxed. Meaningful. Full of the right people and full of moments that actually mattered. It honestly felt like a privilege to be part of their day.
